Viaggiare per il prossimo | Udeshya - Girls in STEM

 Viaggiare è il modo più semplice che l'essere umano ha per crescere, evolvere e migliorarsi. 

Viaggiare è uno strumento di crescita, tanto quanto la scuola che ci accompagna per diverse decadi della nostra vita, tanto quanto la lettura che, libro dopo libro, aggiunge un po' di più alla nostra vita.

Si dice che un viaggio ti cambia la vita, inevitabilmente. Può essere dall'altra parte del mondo come può essere a pochi chilometri da casa tua.

In realtà non è il viaggio a cambiarti ma la percezione che tu hai di quel viaggio, l'intensità con cui lo vivi, la motivazione che ti spinge ad intraprenderlo, la voglia di prendere ciò che ti offre a cuore aperto e di assorbire le lezioni che in silenzio impartisce.

Viaggiare è andare oltre ciò che conosciamo dentro e fuori noi stessi.

Viaggiare è il regalo più utile che possiamo fare a noi e al prossimo.

Il viaggio infatti è uno scambio, uno scambio equo. Di culture, profumi, tradizioni, sapori, idiomi, colori, costumi, credenze, emozioni.

Viaggiare è donarsi al mondo e, allo stesso tempo, riceverlo.

Viaggiare non per il solo gusto di viaggiare, aggiungo io, ma per rendere il mondo un posto migliore partendo da noi per arrivare a condividere con chi incontriamo ciò che siamo e ciò che abbiamo da offrire.

Il mio primo viaggio di gruppo in Nepal, per questo, spero possa essere un'esperienza formativa a livello personale e, soprattutto, utile a livello locale. Per rendere possibile tutto ciò, insieme alla guida turistica Abhimanyu Shrestha e al tour operator Adventure KORA, ho deciso che una piccola parte delle quote di viaggio di ogni partecipante verrà devoluta in beneficenza all'organizzazione "Udeshya - Girls in STEM".

E ora vi racconto chi è e cosa fa questa organizzazione, attraverso le parole di Richa Neupane, co-fondatrice di Udeshya Girls in STEM, che ha gentilmente accettato di rispondere alle mie domande in lingua inglese che io ho poi tradotto in modo da fare conoscere questo ambizioso progetto in Italia.

Innanzitutto, cosa significa Udeshya?

Udeshya si traduce in obiettivo o ambizione. Vogliamo diffondere il messaggio che le ragazze possono puntare in alto e raggiungere qualsiasi obiettivo.

Come, quando e dove nasce l'idea di Udeshya - Girls in STEM?

Udeshya nasce nel 2018 con un piccolo progetto che il nostro team del Nepal ha realizzato dopo aver appreso del metodo educativo delle ragazze in tutto il mondo con il progetto  Teach for All . Ci siamo resi conto infatti che le ragazze nelle scuole pubbliche nei villaggi del Nepal avevano bisogno di molta più conoscenza in questo senso affinchè la loro visione limitata della vita potesse essere ampliata. La vita è più che sposarsi e fare figli, le donne e le ragazze possono contribuire alla società professionalmente, non devono stare solo dentro le quattro mura delle loro case.

Qual è l'obiettivo di Udeshya - Girls in STEM?

Vogliamo portare i programmi, i bootcamp e i mentoring di Udeshya a tutte le studentesse in Nepal, ciò fornirà loro una solida base per intraprendere carriere legate a scienza, tecnologia, arte, ingegneria e matematica (e da qui l'acronimo STEM - science, technology, engineering and math).

Come funziona, cioè come è strutturato il progetto?

I nostri programmi si svolgono sotto forma di:

I. Bootcamp in loco
II. Mentoring online
III. Sensibilizzazione scolastica ed esposizioni

Ogni anno organizziamo da due a tre gruppi di 20 ragazze provenienti da tutto il Nepal che parteciperanno al bootcamp di Kathmandu. Qui le ragazze seguono i progetti seguendone tutto il processo, immedesimandosi nei problemi da risolvere per raggiungere un obiettivo e collaborando per portare nuove idee per risolverli. Imparano anche le basi degli strumenti digitali come Google, Google Maps, Powerpoint. Abbiamo anche iniziato online il mentoring quest'anno tenendo conto del covid-19. A lungo termine, ci auguriamo che all'interno di tutte le scuole tecniche e professionali ci siano dei campi STEM che possano essere condivisi.

A chi si rivolge Udeshya - Girls in STEM?

E' rivolto alle ragazze di età compresa tra gli 11 e i 18 anni provenienti da scuole in comunità scarsamente servite e/o emarginate.

Udeshya - Girls in STEM fa parte di un progetto mondiale?

Per il momento esiste solo in Nepal ma diverse versioni del nostro progetto sono presenti in tutto il mondo.

Da Oriente a Occidente gli stereotipi sulle donne sono sempre stati un problema e continuano ad esserlo: come è visto il vostro progetto in Nepal?

Le donne sono in netta minoranza nei settori quali tecnologia e ingegneria. Soprattutto in ingegneria, è credenza comune che sia un tipo di lavoro più adatto ad un uomo poichè  richiede di viaggiare con degli sconosciuti. Nei villaggi, il matrimonio precoce avviene perché le ragazze cadono nel luogo comune che la società presenta: le donne sono le custodi della casa. Le ambizioni delle ragazze sono limitate, ispirano a diventare insegnanti e infermiere.

Cosa pensano le ragazze alla fine dei corsi ai quali hanno partecipato?

Dopo aver partecipato ai nostri bootcamp, nelle ragazze cresce la fiducia che possono contribuire lavorativamente alla società facendo non solo l'insegnante o l'infermiera ma diventando ingegneri e scienziate come noi abbiamo insegnato loro. Hanno creato anche progetti molto interessanti per risolvere i problemi nei loro villaggi come un club sportivo, un sistema di raccolta dell'acqua piovana per l'irrigazione, tagliaerba per le donne che attraversano e vivono nelle foreste.

Siete soddisfatte degli obiettivi ottenuti fino ad ora?

Siamo felici di vedere le ragazze lasciare i bootcamp con molta più fiducia e motivazione di quando sono arrivate. Tornando nelle loro scuole e nelle comunità possono condividere il loro lavoro, una di loro ha anche incontrato il sindaco del villaggio per condividere nuove utili idee! Questo ci incoraggia a fare di più. Stiamo lavorando per raggiungere un maggior numero di ragazze e trovare risorse di finanziamento sostenibili come le scuole tecnologiche e professionali pubbliche.

Quali sono i progetti futuri di Udeshya - Girls in STEM?

Udeshya Girls in STEM è in fase di crescita, stiamo costruendo la nostra organizzazione per raggiungere più persone e riuscire a fare di più. Stiamo lavorando per diventare una voce importante per comunicare quanto grande può essere il contributo di queste donne e ragazze nella società specializzate in STEM.

 Travelling is the easiest way for the human being to grow, evolve and improve.

Travelling is an instrument of growth, like school that accompanies us for several decades of our life, like reading book that adds a little more to our life.

They said that a journey changes your life. A travel can be on the other side of the world or a few kilometers from your home.

But it is not the journey that changes you but the perception you have of that journey, the intensity with which you live it, the motivation that drives you to take it, the desire to take what offers you with an open heart and to get the lessons that it quietly gives.

Travelling is going beyond what we know inside and outside ourselves.

Travelling is the most useful gift we can give to each other.

The journey is a fair exchange. Of cultures, perfumes, traditions, tastes, languages, colors, customs, beliefs, emotions.

To travel is to give oneself to the world and, at the same time, to receive it.

Travel not just to travel, I add, but to make the world a better place starting from us and to share with those we meet what we are and what we have to offer.

My first group trip to Nepal, for this reason, I hope it will be a training experience at a personal level and, above all, useful at a local level. To make this possible, together with my tour guide Abhimanyu Shrestha and the tour operator Adventure KORA, I decided that a small part of each participant’s travel fee will be donated to charity to the organization "Udeshya - Girls in STEM".

And now I’m going to tell you who this organization is and what it does, in the words of Richa Neupane, co-founder of Udeshya Girls in STEM, who has kindly agreed to answer my questions in English that I then translated in order to get to know this ambitious project in Italy.

First of all, what does “Udeshya” mean?

Udeshya translates to aim or ambition. We want to spread the message that girls can aim high and achieve it.

How did the idea of Udeshya - Girls in STEM come about? And when and where is it born?

Udeshya started in 2018 with a small project our Nepal team did after learning about girl education all over the world with Teach for All Global Girls Education Fellowship. We realised that girls in public schools in villages of Nepal needed much more exposure and knowledge so that their limited views of life could be expanded. Life is more than getting married and women and girls can contribute a lot to society professionally and not just within the four walls of their homes.

What is the goal of Udeshya - Girls in STEM?

We want to bring Udeshya programs, bootcamps and mentoring to all the schoolgirls in Nepal which will provide a strong foundation for them to pursue careers related to Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering and Mathematics.

How does it work? How is it structured? Is it a school or a class?

Our programs are carried out in the form of

I. Residential bootcamps
II. Online and tele mentoring
III. School based awareness and exhibitions

Every year, we take two to three batches of 20 girls from all over Nepal to join the residential bootcamp in Kathmandu. In the residential camp, girls follow the design thinking process to think about the problems they empathise with and collaborate to bring new ideas, models, designs to solve them. They also learn the basics in digital skills such as how to google, mapping your town on google maps, powerpoint presentation. We also started online and tele mentoring this year keeping covid-19 situation in mind. In the long term, the school based awareness and exhibitions will be carried out so that there are STEM camps in every technical and vocational school.

Who is it for?

It is for girls aged 11-18 from schools in underserved communities and marginalized groups.

Is it part of a world project or does it exist only in Nepal?

Versions of camps and mentoring exist all over the world, our project is based only in Nepal.

The stereotype of people towards girls it’s a world problem, from West to East: how is your project considered in Nepal?

Women are in very low numbers in fields like technology and engineering. Especially in engineering, the stereotype of the job being more suited to a man that requires traveling with strangers is existent. In the villages, early marriage takes place because girls fall for the stereotype that society presents to them that they can be one caretakers in the home. Girls' ambitions are limited to teachers and nurses.

What do the girl think about the project after their participation?

After participating in our residential camps, girls have increased confidence that they can contribute to society like the role models and facilitators we introduced them to. They have made very interesting designs to solve problems in their villages such as a sports club, a rainwater collection system for irrigation, grass cutting machine for women who fall in the hilly forests, etc.

Are you happy with the results obtained so far?

We get happy to see girls leave their bootcamps with much more confidence and motivation than they came in with. They go back to their schools and communities and share their work, one even met with their village mayor to share new ideas. This encourages us to do more. We are working to reach more girls and also find sustainable funding resources like the public tech and vocational schools.

What are the plans for the future for Udeshya - Girls in STEM?

Udeshya Girls in STEM is at the growth stage, we are building our organization to reach more people and bring more impact. We are working to become an important voice that shows the contribution of these women and girls in society, through STEM.
